Reasoning Mind

“Solving for Every Variable” is the tagline of Reasoning Mind, an organization that holds firm to the belief that every child deserves a first-rate math education. In 2013, Reasoning Mind called upon Ellen Cokinos Consulting to aid in overseeing and structuring a special event benefiting the organization, held at the Houston Museum of Natural Science. As a result of this effort, the event’s initial fundraising goal of $250,000 was far surpassed, to the tune of $1.56 million.

Ellen Cokinos Consulting’s relationship with Reasoning Mind began in the capacity of executive consultant and resource to the event Chairs and the organization’s Development Staff. In advance of the fundraising event, Ellen Cokinos Consulting reviewed all relevant background materials and created a fundraising schedule that coincided with the event’s overall timeline.

In addition, Ellen Cokinos Consulting worked alongside event Chairs to achieve a number of key milestones leading up to the event, which included:

  • Design and implementation of an event underwriting structure to maximize revenues and minimize expenses
  • Securing event committee members
  • Creation of an underwriter benefit package, based on contribution size
  • Development of an underwriting letter and packet
  • Identification of prospective funders, major underwriter and table sponsors
  • Strategic follow-up calls to potential donors

As a result of these efforts, the event for Reasoning Mind raised more than six times its original target, with final proceeds topping $1.5 million, including a matching grant from The Cockrell Foundation.
